I was very surprised to learn there was a Georgian restaurant in our midst and also that they didn't serve fried chicken with biscuits. Kidding of course. This is place is super tasty and very authentic feeling. The restaurant itself is decorated in a variety of different items from the owners ancestral home. Delightful time and really cool modern/Georgian style adornments. We sat at the huge family table and ate family style. The service was great and thanks to all of the wine...I think we became family. Perhaps to the changrin of all the surrounding patrons. The wine is distinctly Georgian and made in terra cotta pots...very sharp tasting and a byproduct of an 8000 year wine culture. The food is delightful. The dumplings are delicious as was the burek (a type of bread) stuffed with meats or cheese. The sautéed mushrooms are super earthy and delicious. Love the sauces on the table...spicy and herbaceous. An amazing restaurant overall and a nice respite from everything else in Sebastopol.

We arrived in Sebastopol late and found Piala when we were looking for places that would be open past 9. We are SO glad we did! We had an incredible time. From the amazing food to wonderful conversation with the very friendly and generous owner to the awesome playlist. It was a meal we will remember! (See the delicious pistachio honey cake I enjoyed for dessert). Run don't walk!

Amazing food! Amazing wine! Even more amazing service! Seriously worth a special trip. Highly recommend the dumplings and the Pheasant's Tears red wine if you enjoy natural wines.

I was excited to find out there was a Georgian restaurant near my friends while visiting them, so I recommended we stop in to try during happy hours (3 to 5 and 9 to closing). The Georgian cuisine was presented and made well. It's a cozy, rustic chic feel for indoor dining and decor. Everything we tried was tasty and hearty: khilkhani: meat or veggie dumplings, olives and pickled garlic, Pkhlovani: khachpuri bread stuffed with cheese, greens and herbs, Chvistari & lobio: masa cheese cakes and bean stew, kebabi: grilled skewers of beef and lamb, shashlik: grilled skewers of chicken marinated in pomegranate. The Georgian wine we tried seems to be more fruity and sweet in general but went well with the grilled meats we ordered.

One of the few really exceptional restaurants in the area. I've been here four times, and each time just blows my mind. Everything I've eaten is divine. Some favorites: the chicken skewers with marigold yogurt, rabbit and sour plum dumplings, Lamara's Garden salad (seems simple but is so delightfully complex and bright). I always get the house tea and the cake for dessert. The ambience is pleasant and the service is solid. But it's the food that really makes this place sparkle. Highly highly recommend, your taste buds and belly will thank you.

The ambiance inside is cozy and comforting (wooden tables and dark interior lined with clay jugs and wine bottles), while the food and wine are unique and interesting. First time trying Georgian fare and I must say their khinkali dumplings, particularly the crab and adjika butter, were simply divine. A squeeze of lemon and dollop of the adjika sauce (fermented chili sauce) enhanced the light and subtle taste of crab in the soft dumpling wrapper with a complexity of flavors. The khachapuri stuffed with melted cheese and herbs was savory and also paired deliciously with the adjika sauce. The chvistari & lobio (crispy cheese filled cakes & bean stew) was nice because of the unusual flavor of the beans. Maybe we liked it a little less than the other dishes because we couldn't use the adjika sauce on it. (BTW, they do sell the sauce in jars to take home in case you can't get enough.) We didn't like our dessert of the pistachio honey cake as much because we found it a bit dry, although the pistachios were nicely crunchy. We enjoyed the Kazbegi iced tea and the robustness of the rose wine (chinuri shavkapito) with our meal Wonderful place to travel with your tastebuds!

Looked on Yelp and thought - eh ok, not many choices on the menu. Drove up and thought - eh, located in small strip mall. These are all red flags for my - I was actually blown away by this place. I love trying different regions cuisine and this puts a check mark on Georgia - located in the South Caucus region of Eastern Europe. Two weeks ago they did not take reservations so we got there a little early (PRO TIP: they now take reservations and you should make them). We were able to get a seat - really tight seating on the small tables against the wall, you will definitely be on the back of your neighbor. Cool homey interior with a Retail Wine Sales room. We started out with the small eggplant rolls - wow! Amazing! The flavors burst on your mouth - one of my favorite dishes. Next were the dumplings - wow amazing (PRO TIP: put some of the red sauce on the table on them - super good with a little kick). I tried the bean soup - a little flavorless but the dumplings are really good. Mushrooms were amazing. Both deserts are great. I definitely put this on my list to come back to - see you soon Piala!

Piala has comfort food worthy of a visit in the Sebastapol area. Touted as the first Georgian restaurant in the Sonoma area, Piala serves food that has been described as a mixture of European, Persian, Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine. After thoroughly enjoying the Georgian food in the South Bay, I was excited to find that Piala was opening. Located in an unassuming strip mall, entering Piala almost feels like being transported into a cozy home. On the front of the menu, I would say much of it is vegetable forward dishes but there were a few meat dishes. On the back, there was a generous list of wines and drinks available. Here is a list of things I had with rating: Pistachio Honey Cake with Tangerine Glaze & Whipped Cream (4.5/5) Their only dessert was the most memorable bite of the meal. The cake itself is lightly sweetened but made punched up with the tangerine glaze and then mellowed out with whipped cream. I would have loved if the cake were a little more moist because it felt a little dry but otherwise the taste combination really sold it for me. Soko (4/5) While it reads as a simple mushroom dish, it was nice that it had a variety of mushrooms for different textures. It was a little bit salty but the flavors from the herbs really gave it an interesting flavor profile. Pkhlovani (4/5) With flaky pastry baked with cheese and greens, this was a nice counterbalance to the soko. Slightly creamy with a little bit of crunch from the crust, it was nice comfort food. Chashushuli (3/5) This stew of lamb was good but nothing amazing. As one of the few meat entree options, it was a bit small and lacking lamb. The stew itself is homey with nice flavors and plenty of potato and tomato. Glad it also came with sourdough to pair it with. However, if you are looking for something to fill you, this would not be it. Khnkali, the spiced beef and pork dumplings (2/5) Perhaps had too high expectations having this also at Bevri. These were much smaller and heavy handed on the salt. If I were to come back, I would try one of the other versions to see if they are better. In terms of service, it was okay but felt a little disjointed. Felt bad there was only one person handling everything out in front. Please note that all service already comes with 20% gratuity on your bill. Overall, Piala is a good worthy visit especially if you are curious about Georgian food and you are in the Sonoma area.
